    Skin Conditions & Treatments

Acne spots are caused when the hair follicles of the face become blocked, by oils or dirt, and then become infected by the normally harmless bacteria on the face. Acne spots can come in a variety of types and severities, including whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and cysts. Cystic and other severe types of acne are more likely to cause acne scarring.

Acne scarring occurs when acne is burst, infected or inflamed, and leaves scarring on the surrounding skin that lasts much longer than the acne itself. These scars can take many years to heal, and can give a pitted or uneven appearance to the skin.

Hooded eyelids are eyelids that have excess skin that folds down from the brow bone to the lash line, obscuring the crease of the eye and making the eyes look smaller. Hooded eyes can be genetic and many people are born with them, however they can also be brought on by the natural processes of ageing, as the skin starts to sag and fold.

Eye bags can also be caused by genetics or ageing. When caused by the ageing process, eye bags appear when the skin under the eyes loses its elasticity, and the mid-face loses some of its subcutaneous fat, causing drooping and loss of volume in the area. This creates a hollowed, aged and tired appearance under the eyes.

Cellulite affects over 90% of women, and happens due to the relationship between layers of fat, layers of skin and layers of muscle in certain areas of the body, though why it actually appears and is so common among women is still up for debate. Cellulite is characterised by an ‘orange peel’ appearance to the skin, where the skin becomes uneven dimpled and in more serious cases has a lumpy appearance. Cellulite is most common on the legs, hips and buttocks, and can make many women feel uncomfortable about the appearance of their bodies.

Facial wrinkles and folds are a natural part of the ageing process, and happen to everyone as we get older. However, they can make you look older than you feel, and reduce some of your self-confidence.

Facial wrinkles and folds are caused by the skin beginning to droop, sag and fold as we age, primarily due to a loss of collagen which occurs naturally as we age. Collagen is the substance in the skin that gives it elasticity, plumpness and bounce. Without it, the skin becomes flatter and less elastic, causing sagging and folds in the skin. A loss of facial fat as we age also causes drooping in the mid and lower face, leading to further fine lines, wrinkles and facial folds.

Skin pigmentation and texture can both be caused by a wide variety of factors and manifest in many different ways.

Skin texture is often caused by the appearance of acne, blackheads, whiteheads and closed comedones, created when oils, debris and impurities are trapped in the hair follicles on the face, creating raised bumps and texture on the skin’s surface. Overactive oil glands, debris and dead skin cells trapped on the skin’s surface and an overproduction of bacteria on the surface of the skin can all contribute to the appearance of skin texture.

Skin pigmentation is most commonly caused by sun damage, leading to age spots and hyperpigmentation. Irregular skin pigmentation can also be caused by pre-existing conditions like rosacea, hormonal changes such as melasma, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is caused by injury to the skin – most commonly acne scarring.

Fat removal and body sculpting treatments are perfect to treat stubborn pockets of fat that don’t go away on their own, even with a healthy lifestyle and exercise. Hormonal weight gain, pockets of hard to shift fat caused by pregnancy and changes in body shape, including those caused by pregnancy and the menopause, are all effectively treated with fat removal and body sculpture treatments.

Using a combination of radiofrequency and ultrasound waves, fat removal treatments break down the fat cells, reducing their number and helping to smooth and sculpt the area while decreasing the volume of certain areas of the body.

Vaginal and labial laxity are caused by the decline in collagen production that occurs as we age. While it isn’t as initially obvious as on the face and body, the tissues in the vagina and labia also lose their elasticity and strength, leading to sagging, a loss of strength and increased vaginal laxity. As tissues lose their elasticity, sensation in the area can also become decreased, leading to more difficulty becoming aroused, vaginal dryness and difficulty reaching orgasm.

Childbirth can also cause vaginal laxity due to the strain on the tissues caused by vaginal childbirth.

Stretch marks are small, dark pink, purple or ‘silver’ stripes that appear in areas where the skin has been stretched rapidly. They are a form of scarring and may reduce in size and intensity over time, but are often permanent. Stretch marks can appear for a variety of reasons, including pregnancy, rapid weight gain, rapid muscle gain, hormonal changes and changes in the shape of the body, such as during puberty. They may also appear more frequently as we get older due to collagen loss reducing the elasticity of the skin.

Stretch marks can appear all over the body, and are especially common around the thighs, breasts, hips, stomach, arms and buttocks.

Urinary incontinence affects millions of people worldwide, and is very common among menopausal, post-menopausal and post-natal women. Due to a lack of collagen production as we get older, the strength of the tissues in the vaginal canal is decreased, and it becomes more difficult for the pelvic floor muscles to hold the bladder as tightly. This can lead to urinary incontinence, and uncomfortable condition where sufferers find it very difficult to hold their urine, and may find themselves going to the bathroom multiple times an hour.

Urinary incontinence can also be caused by the stretching of the muscles during childbirth. Slight incontinence in the period soon after giving birth is common, though some women find their difficulties with continence continue for months and years after childbirth, which is when treatment may be required. Difficult or long vaginal births, and multiple vaginal births can all make severe incontinence more likely.

Skin tags are small, skin coloured growths that appear most commonly in areas where the skin frequently rubs together, including in the armpits, under the breasts or around the chest. Skin tags usually hang off the body in a small flexible lump. They generally don’t pose any medical risk, but can be unsightly and make you feel self-conscious about your body, reducing your confidence.
